I'm not sure if it's possible to remove O2 branding but if you want it sim free then you will need to use the unlock form which is free for contract customers outside of their minimum term or have paid off their refresh device plan, £15 on payg but you need to make a few chargeable calls & texts so that the imei registers on O2 systems

And to get round the £15 payg charge I would just put my o2 contract sim in it.

Also unlocking is free for contract customers INSIDE their minimum term (certain restrictions apply typically to new iPhone which o2 place a delay of up to 12 months before they unlock unless you pay off the device plan).

Thanks @Perksie. Had seen that and also a you tube video so looks like it should be fairly straight forward. Having done similar to my Note 3 I find unbranded much better, no o2 bloatware. Always a bonus.

Thanks for the link.

Well sorry if I tried to help but maybe you should rephrase the question next time if you already know the answer

If you review the original post it was clear.

Is it possible to remove o2 branded software on a Nokia 1020 and convert it to sim free.

It is possible to unlock a phone for use on another network (which is what your advice kindly explained so thank you) however sim free is different to unlocked which was my question.

Appreciate your suggestions

Debranding doesn't mean sim free, O2 will sell you a sim free handset, still will have O2 firmware on though.
Debranding also won't guarantee less bloat or better system, in the case of xperia handsets, UK firmware doesn't have the network options O2 UK firmware does, also has less bloatware.
Strange times indeed
