Some of you will know that our Jonsie/Steve  (one of the longest serving members of this forum and friend to many) .....was involved in a serious car accident in Thailand on Monday 20th February. He suffered head, chest and leg injuries and was being nursed on a ventilator

Due to the instability of his condition and the fact we weren't sure of the prognosis. I didn't post openly.. even though I had 'written' permission from the family.

Instead I contacted a lot of people via private message and other routes. It was agreed by myself and O2 management that I could post when Jonsie's condition started to improve.

Thankfully that day has arrived.

Steve has two sons who travelled to Thailand to be with their dad this weekend. I have received messages (and a picture) showing that he is now off the ventilator, sitting up in bed and managing Jonsie type conversations with his lads. (In between sleeping a lot which will be due to the pain relief he is receiving)

So great news.

If anyone wants to add good wishes please do so on this thread. (Even if you have sent them to me privately before) I will get them to Steve

As a nurse, I firmly believe in medicine and science. Due to the recovery Steve has made since his sons arrival at his bedside ...I also believe in the power of love.

Continue getting well Steve. heart

@jonsieis now in hospital in Manchester. At least he can now be given some effective pain relief as apparently this has been the most painful 20 hrs.

Pain relies in Thailand consisted of a 325mg capsule called Paramed which I suspect was paracetamol, certainly not very festive for me.

Here there was a cocktail of 4 tablets which allowed me the best night's sleep for 3 months though that could also be the result of less worry.

Paramed is a mixture of paracetamol and codeine. Used here but not very good unless the 30/100mgm dose is prescribed.

Pleased they are going all out to treat that infection spread Steve. No point doing anything to the leg until that's under control....

Thank you @adamtemp64

My son has just called me, it seems the orthopaedic team have reviewed the x-rays and they were all looking and shaking their heads.

They couldn't understand why the specialist in Thailand 🇹🇭 had pinned my leg or why, in the particular manner they have.

The bones are not aligned and show no healing at all so I'm not sure where we go from here. More pain when they break and reset or amputation?.... I await their decision.

I thought it strange that everytime I look down my leg that my foot is pointing outwards by about an inch. I decided it must be the dressings and bandages causing an optical illusion, after all these are the finest specialist doctors in Pattaya. Scary!

I have seen the Xrays and like the orthopaedic specialists in Manchester i shook my head as there was no bone which was in alignment with the next. Here we would have attempted fixation using screws and plates and no external brace. There is no sign of healing because new bone callus won't grow over gaps that wide. I think the external fixator will be removed....leg cleaned thoroughly and bone grafts inserted between plates and screws. None of that till infection cleared though x

Hence my frustration and disbelief that there was no improvement after 3 months. So much wasted time and needless worry.

I would be feeling so much worse if I had paid the £229,859 medical bill (not factoring in the Repatriation expense with business class seats and medical escort to Manchester)

Until the surgeon makes the decision I think you were correct in your initial diagnosis regarding amputation @Cleoriff

I'm now quite scared.

Initial diagnosis made BEFORE you were repatriated back to a country with a superb rep for orthopaedics. Don't forget they were talking about a specialist skin graft unit in Wythenshawe yesterday. Bottom line Steve they will do EVERY assessment needed before reaching a decision and offering you a variety of options xx
