The maximum data usage overseas is now £40. If you need more usage you have to speak to customer service and presuming you didn't, your maximum usage is automatically capped at £40.

This was introduced to stop people coming home to horrendous charges.

From the O2 web site ::
From 1 July we'll stop charging you for data abroad when your data usage reaches £40 (inc VAT) wherever you are in the world, you can then use up to 50MB without any additional charges.
We'll also send you alerts when you've spent £20 and £40; when you're nearing the 50MB limit and if you reach it. If you do reach 50MB; your data service could stop, so if you want to use more you'll need to opt in to a higher spending cap (ideally before you go) by calling Customer Services.
Here are our new data roaming rates which start on 1 July 2010.
Default spend cap (all customers)
Region Cost per MB Charge Limit per Month Usage Limit per Month
Europe £3 £40 50MB
World £6 £40 50MB

Hope this helps, enjoy your holiday in Malta

Sorry, you seem to think this is an official post from O2. This is a customer to customer forum with no official O2 presence.

However, if you have had no text from O2 you shouldn't have used the capped data yet so you should not expect to get a large bill on your return.

According to the information on the website, they send a text when your data usage reaches £20 and again at £40.

If worrying about a high bill is going to spoil your holiday, I would just switch the phone off and use it to text occasionally.

After all, you go on holiday to relax.
