It's a term that was invented by the IT specialists in the early days of digital technology.

 

In those days tech was moving so quickly you could upgrade computer RAM and the hard drive, even the motherboard but keep the same computer casing.

 

Now anybody buying anything new to replace what they currently have is known to be upgrading even if the product is a lower spec and quality, for example you could "upgrade" from a Samsung S8 to an iPhone 7
