My question is that even if I could find my old sim, how do I activate the new one with no phone to place the old sim

That's why you need to call CS or go into a shop. They have all your old details on computer so can activate a new sim from that.

If you take your new phone into an O2 shop and have proper ID to prove it's your account, they will supply you with a nano sim and activate it with your old number.
