It's ok. I've got some sort of service back and managed to ring them. They're aware of the o2 problem and it doesn't look like they'd charge me. Hurrah!
I hope you get it today after all that!

I'm glad to hear you've got it sorted and won't get charged. Forgive my ignorance, but if you've been able to post here, you must have internet access, which I would presume to mean that you have a landline. Why weren't you able to call them on that?

Perhaps getting a cheap plug in handset for the landline for when things like this happen as you pay a line rental (as a backup)

lol, we don't have a house phone anymore. We got rid of it years ago - the only calls we ever got on it were either trying to sell us something or wrong numbers. Everyone contacts us via mobile. So the only reason we have the line now is for internet access.

Maybe I'm getting old, but I've never heard of that before. If you have a line for internet access you pay a monthly rental for the line. Are you saying you can't plug an old phone into a jack and make a phone call if there's an emergency or an incident like what's happened today?

Once we've finished, we fully intend on getting an old phone we can just plug in for emergencies.
If you get an old fashioned analogue one, it can be used to diagnose noisy line faults, the filters in the new digital ones won't do that.
