I bought a new iPhone5 today, and find that I can't connect it to the virginmedia wifi hub in my home (when I try, the notice "unable to join the network virginmedia xxxx" comes up). this is despite the fact that I can connect my iPad and had no problem with my old iPhone 4

To the OP try forgetting the network and reboot your home router and try again.
As long as your putting in the right router password {remember its case sensitive} the iPhone 5 should connect.
Does it connect to free wifi such as Mc Donald's etc Ok.
If not then make an appointment with your local Apple Genius Bar do they can run a diagnostic on the phone to ensure the software and hardware ate running fine.

Try turning off your mobile data before trying to connect. Works on iphone 5s at open hotspots. You can turn it back on once you have connected.
