Since then I have not been able to sue the MMS function on my phone and multiple calls to o2 support have yielded many changes but still no success with being able to send a media message (and when i receive one i'm given a code to use on the o2 website to see the message)

Check the APN's against what you had working earlier.

Is it just MMS that has stopped working or 3G data too ? Do you have any battery saving apps installed on phone?

Assuming nothing else has changed and you still have Packet data turned on you must have an issue with your SIM or account settings.
