I noticed recently that the version of Gmail that came preinstalled with my Samsung Galaxy S2, is a very old version. There's a much better looking version in the google play store, but despite being logged in it doesn't give me the option of updating. It's as though it thinks I already have the most up to date version. How can I update to the latest version?
For some reason I don't have this problem with other preinstalled apps, so it seems to be an issue for Gmail only?
Thanks

Success! Thanks so much for your help MI5, I followed your instructions and upgraded the firmware. I now have the most current version of Gmail and I've also downloaded the Chrome browser. It's SO much better, it basically looks like a new phone.
The only thing I still don't seem to be able to do is open the chrome web store. When I go to chrome.google.com, it says "Sorry, your operating system is not supported just yet." Is this to be expected or do I need to update the OS too?
Thanks again
Edit: The reason I wanted to access the Chrome web store is to download the "Offline Gmail" app.

I thought it might be an Android-specific thing Jonsie, thanks for the confirmation.
Thanks again to everyone who offered advice, I only wish I'd found this forum a year ago!
