Update 22/10, 8:00:

Samsung has confirmed the Jelly Bean update is now available.

Update 20/10:

As you might have noticed, this hasn't gone live yet. We were expecting it to on Friday and are working with Samsung to figure out what went wrong and will update ASAP.

Original message:

Hey Guys,

Good news! The wait time is almost over for Samsung Galaxy SIII users. From tomorrow, 19th October '12, you'll be be able to upgrade to the much awaited 4.1 Jelly Bean update over Wi-Fi or via Kies.

If you have activated the 'auto-update' feature from out of box, you will be prompted to download the 4.1 Jelly Bean update.

JB

Ok... Haven't had much time to play with JB yet but here are my thoughts so far:

Google now - I have already spent a stupid amount of time giving the command "do a barel roll". Its simply, but its ammusing,. Google now on the whole is stupidly fast in comparison to s-voice (can't compare to siri and never had it on my 3gs). The cards look like they are gonna be fun, I get the feeling that soon it is going to be a major advertising tool (eg "your near costa... fancy a coffee?") which is kinda creepy but still kinda fun.

Butter - My handset now stinks of lurpack, it is super fast (even in comparison to the ics fix of reducing transistion times to 0.5x)

Battery - Seems to be draining faster but it may just be that i am playing with it more than usual wink

menu - a few things have changed on the settings menu, i did notice "blocking mode" which looks intresting but i am yet to have a real play with it

Notifications - I like the little blue strip at the bottom and the date which now displays at the top. I am informed that it now groups notifications together but haven't seen it yet

Spam - I did notice that o2 added a cheeky bit of amazon bloatware into the mix and re-installed the "top 40 music" app which i removed previously. Doesn't look like they've crammed it with too much crud though

Looking forward to playing with it properly tonight grin

Succesfully completed update via Kies on win8-x64

Kies froze for about 2 minutes seeming to do nothing after the firmware downloaded from the internet before the next screen came up, this was worrying, but do sit it out if it happens to you, it's probably normal.

I had 2gb free on the phone, googling for questions on it it's sugested on the Samsung Korean website you only need 100mb free on sgs3.

It's dissapointing that the O2 bubble logo still comes up on boot and shutdown in the same way as the previous firmware, it's badly done (dithered background)/very choppy and really gives a very bad impression of the real quality of the phone. It's like an animation was just copied from an older less capable handset.

I'll be honest, I really don't like Touchwiz, I'd rather have vanilla Android and retain as much RAM as possible.

But it's seriously smooth on Jelly Bean, and one of my biggest aesthetic hates on the SGS3, the folder icons, are now much improved.

I still dislike that you can't create folders just by dropping an icon on another icon as you can in vanilla ICS/JellyBean.

The icons in folders all start in one place and animate across the folder when you open it, this doesn't seem to be configurable and is far too slow compared to even the default speed animations in the rest of the OS 😕

There is a new 'Home Screen Mode' advanced (standard) and an Easy mode suposedly making things easier for first time smartphone owners.

New Blocking mode  letsyouy disable notifications/alarms/incomming calls/led indicator always or between set times. It has a whitelist for contacts also.

Accounts are now all listed on the main Settings screen.

'Stay Awake' has returned to the developer options! (screen will never sleep while charging) this had vanished some time from one of the touchwiz builds on the SGS1.

There is a Protect SD card option that forces apps to request permission to read your SD that I don't rember seeing before also.

very very very fast.... not just the display itself, but pulling up the applications lists as well which used to take a while with over 100 apps installed.

I might fill in more at lunch time, but that's an quick overview while I wait 3 min for my work to finish processing slight_smile

It is now 12.07 Monday 22/10 and still no update either ota or through Kies, I am really fed up with this. What a way to treat the customers.

Kies keeps freezing up on the prepare for firmware upgrade page when at 99%, I've left it for half an hour but it won't progress any further, any ideas? I've reinstalled it twice and restarted my phone but no joy, any ideas?

Your phone is unlocked.... O2 will not be giving you the update....

If you plug your phone into Kies and the firmware section doesn't show a firmware that has 'O2U' at the end, then you aren't on O2 firmware, and you won't be getting this O2 firmware Over The Air (OTA) or via Kies. You have an unlocked phone, and will have to wait for the rolling update direct from Samsung to appear for you (it could be weeks, sorry).

Your SIM gets you onto the network, it doesn't effect the firmware on your phone, so doesn't effect who supplies your updates.
