If via an auction site or privately it could be imei blocked.

You may need to speak to O2 to be taken off the iPhone style settings.

When a person changes from an iPhone to another manufacturer occasionally a person encounters issues when trying to use their services.
This can sometimes be corrected by O2 checking the account and changing settings to standard instead of iPhone ones.
Also making sure ones APN settings are set correctly too as iPhone and Android for example are different. http://www.geeksquad.co.uk/articles/o2-apn-settings

I am a little more bothered about there being no service. This points to the phone being blocked as even on an iphone data bolt on, there should be network coverage. Hope this isn't another eBay purchase.

I'm hoping not too @jonsie or perhaps an 02 bill payment has not gone through as it should.
Perhaps trying an o2 payg Sim Card will help to confirm OP.

A simple way to find out if the SIM is at fault would be do a factory reset. Starting from a clean slate should help rule out possible gremlins. Then from there, if it still misbehaves then you have a case to tender.
