I had a problem with my phone constantly losing signal, and the suggestion was made that i changed the sim. I went into an O2 store and within 10 minutes walked out with a (free) replacement sim already connected to O2 and working.
If O2 can do this, I don't know why they would suggest or endorse a riskier alternantive of sticking something in your phone that the manafacturer never intended it to accept?

I had a similar problem when using one in my old Nokia 6500, although I did manage to get it out without damaging the phone - more by luck than judgement I have to say.
Personally I would advise against using these adapters, especially when it's so quick and easy to get a replacement sim - your local O2 store usually have normal/micro sims in stock or you can order them online, and sim swap can also be done online, usually takes less than an hour!
