Calls going through to voicemail/ doesn't ring

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 (one year old).

In the last 6 months I have noticed that more and more, when some people call me their calls go straight to voicemail. My phone doesn't ring so I can never pick up. This happens a lot with phone numbers categorised as private numbers (e.g. GP surgery) but it can also happen with calls from 'normal' numbers.

I have checked my blocked numbers and auto-reject numbers but these settings do not have any correlation to this problem. Also I have no numbers  set to go straight to voicemail.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how to resolve this issue? I've missed some very important calls because of this problemand it's getting very frustrating.

Thanks

Occasionally it can be due to network congestion (the cell tower can't find a free slot to connect the call to you).

If you check the advise given and it is still an issue try contacting O2 to report a potential fault
