I've created a Gmail account as well, 10GB puts Sky's/o2's 20meg (after the broadband transfer) right to shame doesn't it! Will soon start transferring all my contacts soon to my Gmail account.

@When moved to Sky Broadband, the new @Anonymous.com addresses will have unlimited storage (but I'd still recommend Gmail instead).

Isn't Sky email now part of Yahoo Mail which they seem to be having issues with?

Sky Mail dropped Google Mail and went to Yahoo! Mail. I don't know why.

The Yahoo! Mail service does not have IMAP so pretty useless for me. (Also why I can't use Outlook.com mail.)

Regarding gmail, you don't have to look at the adverts - just access via a mail program over IMAP (Outlook, Thunderbird, AppleMail etc.) or use the Opera browser mail client which is very nice and lets you do things  you can't do in the web client - like sort on message size.

They appear on the right hand side of the screen when you open an email. They do on both my gmail accounts using vertical split.

OK.....I disabled Adblock and I now see what is meant by adverts.

The Google opt-out settings do not seem to eliminate all the adverts but Adblock is 100% effective.

Strange, I only see adverts in Gmail Webmail, none in Thunderbird or in the Android app.

I don't use any ad-blocker.

Make sure you haven't "disabled on this page".

I once used Firefox with Adblock, Adblock+ Element Hiding Helper and Flashblock but didn't see any adverts in Gmail.

To be honest it wasn't until I disabled Adblock that I realised the extent of the ads in Gmail.

I'm using Google Chrome now with :

Adblock

Adblock+ Element Hiding Helper

Do Not Track

Flashblock

Ghostery

and I see nothing but clean webpages. They may take a second or two longer to load but adverts are zero.

Even so it's hardly bad enough to justify not using Gmail........
