mobile phone rest of the world charge

why are we  being charged £7.50 for rest of the world 24hr, to our knowledge abroad we switched off mobile data and only used phone for WhatsApp, we are going abroad again shortly what did we do wrong to get charged £7,50 each and what should we do in future so we do not incur this charge.

WhatsApp uses data @DerekOverton , so unless you were connected to WiFi it would incur charges.

Put your phone into airplane mode.

Then turn on WiFi.

Depending on your phone it could also be trying to register for things like iMessage or Visual Voicemail.
