I am having constant signal drop outs - more out than on, sometimes up to 24 hours off then an hour on. Shows awareness 'of problems' on coverage map but never improves although I am only a mile from mast with no intermediate hills, buildings or trees!

You could try a replacement SIM as they are known to go faulty. Best calling in to an O2 shop with photo ID for that.
However, if the phone is fine in other areas then it looks like a network issue.
