Text messages being sent by old nuber

We have recently changed the mobile number for my wife's phone but when she sends a text message, the recipient sees it come from the old number even though the old number has been deleted. Can anyone please explain why?

Is your wife's phone an iPhone?

If so go to settings//phone//my number

Put correct number in, save and then reboot the phone
