Phone Stolen

Hello, my phone was stolen today - swiped out of my hand by a thief on a bike - and I was wondering if there's anything that needs to be done in terms of my SIM? The police have been informed, and I have used the Google track my phone service to lock the phone (although I don't know how effective this is, the phone seems to have been turned off as soon as it was stolen, unsurprisingly). I have dug out my old phone to use and just inserted a new SIM card in it, and to my surprise it has instantly recognised my data plan from the stolen phone and is acting as if nothing has changed whatsoever, so is that the end of that? I don't need to cancel anything or change anything, it just happens automatically? I tried the phone number recommended by O2 for stolen devices as apparently they too can block phones from being used, but the number didn't work and if the Google block is sufficient then I don't see the point in blocking it if it is already blocked, plus I'm happy that my data plan is now working on my old phone. Is this advised? Thank you.

You do need to report it to O2 Guide: Lost or Stolen O2 Device? - How to Report it

and not sure why your "new" sim is working unless you went in store and had a new sim activated on your account?

If so. make it clear to O2 that you have a sim and it's just the handset that needs to be barred.

If you message O2 on Facebook (https://o2uk.co/O2CFB) , Twitter (https://o2uk.co/O2CTW) or Instagram (https://o2uk.co/O2CIG) , they should be able to help you with this.

You will need to contactO2 and advise them - try the Social media path, links below, @AWRodgers - O2 will not only block the SIM but also the phone, effectively rendering it useless. Also you are liable for any charges on the SIM unless you inform O2 - you have a police report number, which should help.

Official O2 line here: https://www.o2.co.uk/help/device-and-sim-support/lost-or-stolen-device

Good luck.

Thank you, the phone numbers are not working from the thread you sent me, however I have sent O2 a message on Facebook telling them the situation, so hopefully it can be sorted now. Any idea on their response times? Thanks for your help!

It may not be until tomorrow due to the bank holiday weekend, but you're covered as you've reported it anyway.
