Yes it's perfectly secure and is the cheapest option if you have enough data on your mobile contract.

I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

Currently using:
Pixel 7a (O2 & Lyca), One Plus 6 (Sfr), iPhone 12 Pro Max (Vodafone)

@Longbones You could get a dongle from the network that as the best signal in the area you're staying and not just be reliant on a good signal from O2, so that might be an option for you.

I DO NOT WORK FOR O2

If using it in a campervan, have a look at anywhere sim  ( Anywhere Sim Home Page) , which allows you to roam on all the UK Networks, the downside is everything is data is charged at 10p per MB.

- Xperia 1V - o2 and Spusu
- Pixel 8 Pro - o2 and Vodafone UK

@Longbones

Not with O2 as your data prices will be much higher than your phone contract and you get much less data.
