😅I’ve been with O2 for a number of years now , no problems encountered. This time the connection is somewhat very very very substandard. Can’t connect at my place of work, drops connection at home and friends, even out on the road it’s very poor . I’d like to know if I can get out of a 36 month contract 6 months in.

You need to pay off any termination fees / device plan and then you can leave, have a look at this guide here Guide: Cancelling Your Contract

Also have a look at these guides Guide: How can I sort out my network issues?  and Guide: Is the network down for me or everyone?

Also note o2 dont guarantee 100% coverage or uptime, as per the T&C's you agreed to.
