keep existing number while changing SIM card size

my new phone requires nano SIM. how can I keep existing number on new nano card. done the text swap thing and still nothing

Does it matter that new sim is in my new phone or should I put it in old device

 Keep the old sim in the old phone. Once it loses connection then keep rebooting the new phone with the new sim in

OK. But should the new sim say emergency calls only in sim card manager. Also says unknown under emergency calls only too

Yes it's a blank simcard.
