Check for network issues http://status.o2.co.uk/
Try your sim in another phone or another sim in your phone.
Sometimes a reboot will fix it but others a new sim is required or could even be a faulty phone.

Some generic help here too http://community.o2.co.uk/t5/Pay-Monthly-and-Pay-Go/Self-help-guide-Is-the-network-down-for-me-or-ev...

I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

Fairly ancient (4 years) by today's standards. @Anonymous is this an old phone of yours or did you just get it from somewhere else?

I DO NOT WORK FOR O2

You need to pop into an o2 shop and ask them for a sim swap.

You have a new sim, that explains it.

Do the sim swap either by going instore or use the form here : Swap my sim

You can also text SWAP to 20220 from your old sim and follow the instructions.
