Resolved! Either extremely incompetent or incredibly predatory/unethical.

I called 202 as I wanted to cancel my contract and transfer my number to PAYG. I had already paid off the device/ contract and at the moment it is just a rolling airtime plan (overpriced at that) so I thought it's time to move it to PAYG as it suits ...
