Transferring number

Just inserted my sim into my phone, how do I know if my number transfer has been scheduled? Had no email or text. Won't even let me schedule it on My O2 because its telling me to insert the sim, when I have.

My wife is having issues with upgrading. I understand that it is possible to have more than one phone on an account. If I were to apply for a new phone can my wife's existing O2 sim be used in the new phone?
