Do you recieve emails onto your phone? Have you changed your email password before this problem started happening?
The reason I ask is that i have found should I change my email password on the internet, my phone will still recieve emails even though it doesnt know about the new password. Only when I try and send an email will it have problems until I update my settings on the phone to reflect the new password.
Can you access the internet on your phone?
The "cannot connect to server" message basically means that your phone can't connect to the network it is supposed to be connected to, so you shouldnt be able to access the internet either.
I think the simplest solution would be for you to speak to a Guru in in O2 shop who should be able to resolve the problem quickly for you.
