You need to switch to a sim only tariff to save money or just continue paying the same as you do now.
If you go sim only the 12 month deals allow you to upgrade after 3 months but obviously the 1 month ones you can upgrade at any time.

Hi

After your contract has run its course it will auto drop onto a 30 day rolling contract.

Although You can ask O2 via 202 to be either put on a sim only tariff which are either 12 months or 30 days as these May have better allowances ref data etc or ask to be put on payg.

Then when your ready again phone them and ask to be put back onto a full
Contract and upgrade.

Sim only tariffs here https://www.o2.co.uk/shop/simplicity/#showAll=true

As with any upgrade your choices are limited to what you are prepared to spend unless you buy the phone outright.
