No way to do it secretly though unless you can intercept the phone notifications.

That's the best plan. Just make sure it's the correct size sim for the new phone. If not either order one online or pop into your local O2 store and pick one up. You can transfer the number and tariff here

An upgrade isn’t actually a new contract in the context that it’s a completely new line. That needs to be made clear. It’s the same number & account but a new phone & tariff but sometimes people choose a new phone when they upgrade but then choose the same tariff as they had before
