Upgrade downtime

I'm currently on a 30day rolling contract. If I upgrade using the store it looks like it wants to send me a new SIM. Can I just upgrade my contract (add data allowance and minutes/texts) remotely without having to swap sims or numbers. Just pay more, can get the allowance. How long for this change to take effect?

Yes you can. The change is done on the system so no need to change sim if you are using the same phone.

Normally new sims are sent out to ensure they are compatible with handset / network upgrades ( 4g)

As @jonsie says if done as an upgrade then the system is updated for the current sim you do not need to use the sim supplied unless the old one is not compatible with the handset then you use the swap my sim form to transfer the number over .

Or you can just keep the spare sim for use later .

Edit

the swap normally is on monthly renewal date but customer services can change it from midnight. ( you have to call them)
