Unrecognised payment taken from debit card

Anonymous
Not applicable

Having checked  my bank statement I have found a payment which appears to come from O2, but for which I have no other record of either setting up or having made manually.

Normally when topping up with O2 you get a text message confirming it has taken place, there is no such message associated with this transaction...

The payment shows up with a reference of MIP*O2 UK Top Up, 441132722320 GB

I checked with the customer support desk yesterday evening and they could find no record of it so have had to cancel my debit card.

If you are a synic like me, if you remove the 44 from the front of the reference number and replace it with a 0 you gets a Leeds area phone number, O2 have one of their call centres in Leeds, but this might just be some dreadful coincidence, as ringing this number just gives a NP (no party connected) dial tone.

Has anyone else come across this, and what is the solution - apart from stopping the debit card - ??

Have you contacted your bank - I always go there first for such issues and they usually have much more info than what is on the statement.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

@Anonymous As has been suggested by @MI5, check with your bank. Do you have a Pay & Go sim that you normally top up?

I DO NOT WORK FOR O2

There have been many instances in the past of fraudulent top ups on o2, a simple search will show how widespread this was. Was it for £30 by any chance? Anyway I thought this had long since been eradicated. The bank should investigate and refund for you.

@jonsie I've just googled that, woah.... There's loads of them, and an article explaining exactly why the scammers/fraudsters use O2.

Next question, do O2 now employ verified by visa when ppl top-up online? If not then this scam is still wide open to be abused 😳

Not heard of any on here for a long while but this particular instance could be something entirely different.

Not sure about online...but I topped up my sons payg phone last week (from my contract phone) and the card details requested (for first time using it) were very detailed. Security code and address details requested. However once that card is registered with O2 ..the topping up process is very quick thereafter

I'm always asked for the verified by visa details but that's down to the issuing bank rather than O2.
