Call me naive, but having transfered from a monthly SIM to Classic Pay & Go, I suspect I'm being charged to receive calls.
On contract I thought I only paid to make calls,
So is paying to receive and make calls on P&G correct.
Makes my Cost Benefit Analysis before changing a nonsense if true.

Receiving a call is free on P&G just the same as on contract. You need to check where your credit is going with customer service. If you have a smart phone it may be that you are paying the £1.00 Daily Web if data is turned on.

Certainly not if you are only using phone in the UK.
When abroad in some countries you will be charged but never in the UK.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

How much are the charges? It sounds like the Web Daily as suggested by @jonsie. This is where on pay as you go if you have mobile data switched on, it will take £1 each day for internet usage

Classic Pay & Go is a simple old fashioned tariff. No fancy add ons like Web Daily.

Key features: 5p a minute, 5p a text, 5p a MB of 2G/3G/4G data in the UK

Anyway Mobile Data is switched off because, as I said, I use WiFi all the time.

Difficult to know what the charges are because I've not found any log facility on My O2.

I only get a display of Balance (I've paid), but there is also Special credit which has to be read by a text of BALANCE to 20202.

But today I've made no calls, received 1 call and been charged 52p.

Unfortunately there is no easy log to see for PAYG.
You can pay £10 for a record of charges but that kinda defeats the whole point of your question.
I'd call 4445 and speak to customer services (25p per call) and ask them what the credit has been used on.
