HI,
Wouldn't you be aware of the charges being a contract customer for 10 years.
You could look at any Home Contents Insurance T&C to see if one covers your mobile phone for loss and accidental damage ,if not ask how much it would be to add it, and then you could cancel your O2 insurance.
Some Bank Accounts provide this cover too. Check T&C.
There are plenty of standalone mobile phone insurance companies as you say but read their T&C thoroughly. On most if you pay monthly then to make a claim you have to pay an excess ,and pay the remaining years premiums up before a claim is honoured.
You could just cancel your o2 insurance but the dangers are that a typical smartphone is in the hundreds of pounds if the worst happens.

It was your choice to have the insurance, it's not compulsory and you can cancel any time.
I'm failing to see why you're so angry!
