I wondered why o2 charge for a picture messages where most of my friends or contacts don't on other mobile operators?

All networks charge for mms either directly or through buying a bolt on to allow a number of free ones to be sent.

They are chargeable because they use and old level of tech which is not compatible with current data systems.

They way you can avoid charges is to use apps such as WhatsApp, Facebook messenger, line, wickr etc.
