O2 won't unlock my old contract phone

Anonymous

Topic.

Been on with O2 on 202 and the live chat since the 19th of May about unlocking my old Samsung Galaxy S2 which is just out of contract with O2.

I rang 202 on Tuesday, as they said last week that it would be unlocked within 7 days of last Tuesday, no unlock, they sad it would be done by close of play the next day, so I rang up again on Wednesday, no joy and was told to contact Samsung, which I did, they told me they do not give out unlock codes and told me to ring O2 back! I did, and O2 told me that because the phone was not bought direct from O2, they couldn't unlock it! So yesterday I went to Phones 4 U in the Meadowhall Centre to enquire if they could unlock it, the do not unlock phones and told me to go to O2, which I did, went in the shop, they told me to contact customer services on 202, I explained that I already have and they won't play ball!

All I want to do is unlock a flippin' phone that is out of contract so I can either sell it on eBay or keep it as a spare! Why is that so flippin' hard?!

I'm sorry but I have just about had it with O2 customer services, the live chat "Gurus" are about as much use as a chocolate teapot, and the 202 service is also useless IMO.

I do sympathise. If only 3 weeks then your O2 number will still be associated with the IMEI and the unlock should be free. Send in the online form again. Nothing to lose except a bit of your time and more of your hair.

How true, but today, yet another person has promised to sort it all out.  This time from the customer complaints department.  If they are not going to do it, I just wish they would tell me and give me a reason. Yes is a good answer, no is a good answer, but maybe is no answer at all.  We should call this the pass the iphone game.

I'm having the same problem.

For three weeks.

Three times customer services have said yes they'll unlock it, last week I was told it was going to be esculated. Filled in the online form (though CS say it makes no difference to phoneing them up and asking them to do it)

Now they are blaming Apple and saying it's their end.

Next stop the guy in the dodgy shop who says he charges a tenner to unlock anything...AND I'm going to chase O2 for all them money I'm having to spend with them because I can't escape.

At any time have you tried another networks sim in your phone and/or connected to iTunes (depending on which iPhone you have)?

I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

As far as i can see there should be no reason why an iphone can't be unlatched, with the exception of the iphone 5s and 5c, the matching criteria is that the account must not be in arrears, and the iphone must have been used recently on the network so the IMEI shows up in one of the pieces of software, this along with the account holders name, account number and phone number are entered into a form which is sent off, and anywhere from an hour to 72 hours later a text message is sent to the account holders number saying the phone is unlocked, you then connect it to itunes with a NONE O2 (Also includes Tesco and Giffgaff) uk sim in it, and then to sync it with itunes to complete the unlatching process via the PC using the iphones origonal itunes account.

The cost of unlatching an iphone is free for pay monthly customers and £15 for pay and go customers, which is taken off thier pay and go credit

Please note, i know this is the correct procedure as i do it every day at work for customers

So do we - There is a guide here http://community.o2.co.uk/t5/Other-Products-Services/Unlocking-an-O2-phone-to-use-a-different-SIM-card/m-p/540294#M9243

However, for some, it doesn;t always go smoothly, usually die to forgetting security answer or finding out after a few weeks of pain that the phone was never locked in the first place wink

I was told today that because I got the phone through Phones 4u O2 can't unlock it. Having said that I have no sim in my old phone & haven't used it for a few weeks would putting my new sim in old phone make any difference?

No with a new O2 sim it should still work on O2, or did you mean something else?
