Just upgraded my phone, will the o2 open discount be automatically moved to new plan?

With an upgrade it should be carried over. You need to check in My O2

If it's not there, then you will have to apply again

Certain new phones are excluded from o2 open ... beware 🙂

Mine expired after 2 years after I paid my phone off but I would have needed to reapply if I was to take out a new handset / contract

That has always been the situation

Some new phones are not available for O2 Open for the first few months

Any time you change tariff or upgrade you need to reapply for the discount
