What country and area are you in? Some places abroad haven't got 4G.
We need a lot more information to be able to solve the problem.
Try turning to 3G and see if that works.
Or do a manual search for another network.
Can you use WiFi (which will be a lot cheaper)?
Finally if you aren't able to use data at all, you could contact customer services to check whether there is a roaming bar on your account.

If you have an iPhone, change your data APN to "mobile.o2.co.uk"

It certainly sounds like the usual iphone poblem.

Although the OP never mentioned iPhone, which is why I didn't.. Also only made reference to 4G (which is why I said we needed a lot more information)
