Data Allowance Used; Not receiving messages

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi everyone,

Wasn't sure whether this should come here, or in the Apple part of the forum so bear with me!

I've got an iPhone 5s on Pay Monthly and have used my data allowance for the month (rather too fast I feel, but thats a separate issue).

I know the policy has changed on how o2 data now (not even snail's pace, just nothing once the allowance is used) - but I'm getting frustrated with being out and about and not receiving messages from people until I'm in a Wi-Fi zone. Instead of iMessages coming through as texts, they just don't come through at all, until I'm in a wifi area. Before if I was out of internet connectivity area (no data access) these messages would automatically turn themselves into texts, but no more! I just simply dont receive them, and then get a flurry of iMessages when online again.

Is this a result of the new data measures, or a quirk of the iPhone 5s (only had it a couple of weeks), or something else completely?

Any help much appreciated!

iMessage has always depended on a data connection as it's a breakaway from normal texts.

I'm on pay as you go go go 4g for £15.

Tariffs.

My texts have auto converted from iMessages to text messages if data is turned off.

Depicted by the blue iMessage bubble colour to normal green text colour.

Try resetting.

Hold the Top Button and Home Button until the Apple Logo appears, and then let go of both. Your iPhone will reset.

And or ;

Settings , General , Reset , Reset Network Settings.

Hi bandofbrothers,

Thanks for the advice. I have done so, so lets hope that resolves the issue.

Just annoying not to receive messages until you're home!

It does seem strange. No reason I can think of why they shouldn't still come through as texts....?

I would say it would depend on wether the senders phone is set to send as a text if IMessage is not available if not then I would imagine that would be why

Still no avail. Reset as suggested and with Wifi turned off had a friend send me an imessage. It didnt materialise as a text after 10mins, so switched the wifi back on, which usually prompts it to deliver as an imessage.
This time nothing happened at all. So I've not received the message full stop. Incidentally, her phone indicates that the iMessage is "Delivered".

Gone from bad to worse!

Thanks guys, but I've done all of that and still nothing.

When sending messages to people I can still force the text rather than iMessage, but if the person tries to respond then I wont receive it until I'm in a wifi zone. A few times I haven't ever received iMessages that have been sent to me whilst out of data connectivity. They just simply have never materialised (despite the sender's phone showing the message has been sent as an iMessage in a blue bubble, with 'Delivered' underneath).

I really don't know what else I can try now.

This is a bit drastic but.

Perform a back up to iCloud and or iTunes.

Go into ;

Settings , general , reset , erase all content and settings.

Then re download your info via the back up and reset up iMessage.

Tbh I'm not convinced even doing this will help.

Remedy is to ensure you have available data via bolt ons as said.
