For some people the 36 month contract is the reason they join. It reduces the monthly payment to something affordable to them.

With the extorniate price of new phones now the only way for some people to afford one is over a longer period of repayments. With a top end phone over a £1000 many parents with children all wanting phones choose 36 months.
