Charged for receiving calls in France

Anonymous

Having got a good French mobile deal for France I was surprised to see call chargrs on my O2 bill. But I'be now realised I've been charged 41p for each of the calls I'be received and answered while here. Am I missing something, or is this a mistake? In each case the number of the call I'm supposed to have made is my own O2 number. I'm confused.

I don't think you've been scammed I just don't think you understood how O2 travel works yes it can be very expensive for short calls

A quick check of the terms attached would confirm it's not a scam.
Roaming charges have been reduced recently ahead of the official ruling to abolish them completely. Some networks, where they have a parent network in the respective foreign countries have brought this in already but I suspect they will all try and recoup any costs elsewhere.......

I'm afraid that until recently all the networks charged to receive calls when abroad.

The reason for this is that the uk company has to pay the foreign network to access their airwaves.

However as more mergers continue across Europe networks now tend in many cases to own the foreign network hence why the EU are making changes to reduce the costs.

Expect line rental and maybe handset devices to increase as a result though. The mobile operators will need to recover their revenue somewhere.

Learning curve, yes. If they've always charged for receiving calls, then my own fault... probably hadn't picked that up as I so rarely take calls. But I will be checkung back through my records, and switching to by-the-minute billing now I've got a decent French mobile that gives me 3Gb of data and free landline calls worldwide for 20 euros a month. Less custom for O2 from me.

Sounds reasonable to go with what works for you.

Indeed. I prefer to stick with my O2 mobile and their T&C's when I travel to Spain. The 50p one off fee for an hour call (whether calling or receiving) takes some beating in my opinion...

With me its a question of managing the calls...so that no-one makes a 2 minute call...unless its an emergency ..
