O2 Travel

Anonymous
Not applicable

Off on a cruise at the end of the month sailing transatlantic to Nova Scotia then down the eastern seaboard of USA and eventually back via the Azores. Have O2 Travel as a bolt-on so that in theory allows 120mins of calls and 120 texts for a daily charge of £4.99 while in Canada or USA. There appears to be no upper limit on data for the O2 Travel Bolt on.

What I'm unclear about is what actually triggers the daily charge. Does it kick in merely by connecting to a local network when I land in Canada or USA or do I have to make a call, send a text or access the internet before the charge is triggered.

An added complication is that during our atlantic crossing(s), I will be connected to the ships satellite mobile system operated by Telenor Maritime which I believe is based in Norway. What charging systrem will O2 use in that situation. I asked O2 customer services that same question and was advised just to switch off my phone for the whole duration of the crossing - not very helpful or informative

Sending one text, using 1mb of data or making a phone call will trigger the charges.

@Anonymous That I'd helpful in a sense as if you are on a cruise ship, they run their own networks & extortionate charges which will have nothing to do with o2

But for once a very sensible answer. No way would I be willing to pay satellite mobile charges unless it was a real life/death emergency.

£1.50 à min to call and £1.50 a text from ships. You also get charged around £8.00 to receive a call or some other extortionate amount.
As for activating the travel charge when on land, sending a text, making a call or using any data will activate it.

Look at the ships network option in this list for charges

Crippling prices. The statement to leave your phone off was the best advice possible.

Hi @Anonymous, nice to have you here! Your cruise sounds amazing!! slight_smile Hope you have a lovely time!!

Please do check the advice given above to avoid unwanted charges, as the charges are indeed very different and higher when it comes to connecting via satellite systems. Do you feel like it's quite clear or do you have any additional questions? Please do let us know!

Thanks guys for your help! slight_smile
