If you are including smilies or sending long texts then the message is being sent as MMS not SMS which is why you are being charged.
There have been several threads on here but see this post on how to avoid it

They do not do free texts anymore for PAYG..!!!
However if ur on a contract o2 i think u can still send unlimited texts...

P&G tariffs normally include a text allowance.

O2 canned the online texting years ago. Download either Mightytext or mysms and you can, text from your PC but it's not free, texts come from your allowances.
