Connection Manager versions

About a month ago, I purchased myself a Mac Airbook and an O2 Pay as You Go Broadband dongle.  By the shape of it I would say its the Actatel one, although there are absolutely no markings other than an O2 logo to indicate which one it is.

About the time I bought it I seem to have installed connection manager.  I don't really know where I got it from - I can only presume I downloaded it from the web site here - but it reports that it is version 8.9.

This week was the first time I had reason to try and use it.  But there are some problems with it.  In particular - every button and label in the application is labelled with what looks like a java name, rather than the text of what the application is supposed to do when you hit that button.  I got connected - I presume one of the obvious buttons on the front does that - but I have no idea how to do other important things - in particular work out how to know how much credit I have or to purchase more.

I tried to download and install the current version on the web site - but it is labelled (or at least the manual next to it is) as 8.8 - and when I do try and install it  it reports that a later version is already installed and it won't let me go any further.

So - what is the latest version? and if its version 8.8 how did I get version 8.9?

Am I safe on a Mac to just delete the application (bundle)?
