RE: Lumia 520 help

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi everyone,

Hoping someone can help...........

I have just bought a Lumia 520 (my first smart phone), previously had a Nokia X2-00 on PAYG and used opera mini for web.  Hardly used my 100MB data allowance ever.

Totally new world with the Lumia, but basically I only want to use my Mobile Data for web browsing not for updating Apps and other progs.  If I leave Mobile Data on, is there anyway to stop everything else using my data allowance?

Cheers,

As long as you use the back key to come out of your apps they will all close and not update in the background. If you just press the Windows key to get back to homescreen they will keep running.
I use an app called "connectivity Tiles" which gives me a shortcut from the homescreen to all network & data functions.
Also make sure you don't have any live tiles updating all the time on your homescreen, like Facebook, Twitter etc....

Not easily. The best way is to keep mobile data off unless you want to browse.
Check that you have background updates turned off for all apps and you should be able to keep data usage to a minimum.
The ideal amount on a smartphone is not less than 500mb a month.

Unless I am being stupid, I don't seem to be able to shortcut turning Mobile Data on/off, I have to go settings/mobile/network/dat connection dropdown then select ON.  Seems a long way around when I just want to have a quick check of something on the web.

Whats the best way to check the background updates are all off ?

So with the Tile App  could I put a homepage shortcut to turning data on/off ?  And do the same to the battery page ?

Have you seen any apps which allow the old style of SMS display?

Many thanks

Yes the app has a live tile you place on the homescreen then it's one click straight into each setting.....
I only got into Windows phone at Win 8 GDR2 so I'm not sure what the old style SMS was, sorry....??

With contacts, I imported from my old sim which was just phone numbers.  I also have a hotmail account so now all my phone numbers and emails appear in

a) my mobile contacts

b) my hotmail address book

Is there anyway of just showing phone number contacts in my phonebook?

Open your "People" app, hit settings, then "filter contacts".

yep, but if I untick Hotmail, all contacts disappear.  I presume because my initial contact import from Sim copied to my Hotmail ?

It does sound like it did...
Log in here and click on View Contacts to see what's sync'd to your windows ID.

If nothing, copy your contacts in and edit them then the phone will sync with this contact list and you can delete the others if you wish.
