Nokia Lumia 1020 Queries

With the rumours of a Telefonica Nokia Lumia 1020 coming (in 64gb I may add!) I am very interested… couple of questions

1: Will it be sold sim free (well, PAYG)?

2: If so would you be able to use a GiffGaff SIM in it?

Pre-ordered today! Back on contract with o2 4G (ooooh) and got a free accessory bundle for pre-ordering… which is rather good because I don't think I would have bought any of the accessories otherwise, but I'm kinda happy to have them for free!

Sounds like a good idea… have a feeling I'll be a very happy chappy from what I've heard about this phone. My only concern was 32GB wasn't enough, so as soon as I saw that O2 got a 64GB instant pre-order!

Is it the 25th yet?

Wow phone is great… was up very late last night playing with it (and was late this morning as a result, woops).

Was having issues with it this morning on the way into work where my GiffGaff 620 could load sites instantly while my 4G 1020 was struggling… was gonna rant my arse off, but then I turned the phone off and on and all works fine (that old chestnut!). I think the phone was probably still stressed from the mass of app downloads/photo transfers/music transfers/settings changes I had inflicted on it the night before.

Will definitely be reviewing both the 4G service and the 1020 handset after some more time.

I haven't even got to playing with the camera yet!

Hi zzsanguinius23,

Great to hear some thoughts slight_smile

What features have improved or been added since your last phone? Did you have both the 820 and the 900?

A comparison would be brilliant for everyone thinking of getting one.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Modified a message about the 1020 I writ to Toby as it's appropriate for here…

The 1020 is great, I've thoroughly enjoyed my two days with it so far and can see myself enjoying it from here on in. The other two phones I had previously were a Nokia 808 Pureview (the first Nokia phone with a similar 41mp camera and pureview technology in) and a Nokia Lumia 620 (I'm a Nokia fan, can't fault the build quality).

I loved the Nokia 808 Pureview for it's camera but as Nokia moved to Windows Phone I wanted to test the waters and see if I liked the OS hence I bought a nice cheap 620 (PAYG when O2 did a day where you could purchase them for £120) and I absolutely fell in love with the OS.

So on one hand I had a very premium device with an amazing camera but the OS and general operation/speed etc was starting to show its age (the 808 Pureview) and a Lumia 620, which although a very competent phone (especially for the price point) it is still a budget phone, and when things are built at a budget you can tell. Obviously whenever I bought out the 620 I rarely bothered taking photos because they weren't really that great, again not bad for the budget phone status, they capture the moment but they don't really impress and it's nowhere near the quality of the 808, you could tell they were average phone photos.

Thus the 1020 is perfect, as it has the OS that I love from the 620, and the camera ability that I love from my 808, plus a few more bells and whistles (bigger more sensitive screen, wireless charging add-on, faster processor, more RAM etc).

If you're looking for a Windows Phone (don't believe the hype about no apps, there's significantly less apps, and it's still not number one on corporate app builders to make a windows phone app, but there is a lot of 3rd party apps that do a lot of the work great) with great build quality (it's Nokia), all the usual flagship smartphone specs (but as it's Windows Phone they don't need quad core and 4gig of RAM so thus battery life is pretty good too) and an unrivalled camera (apart from maybe the 808, but as that's not being made anymore it doesn't really count) then I highly recommend.

my partner has the 820, i had the 900.

So in comparison to them both, the obvious thing is the camera is the best out of all 3 easily.

Screen wise:

The lumia 1020 has a smoother experience scrolling, easier on the eyes, feels less harsh to look at and the higher dpi does improve the screen in terms of sharper lines.

The lumia 900 cant beat it at all (sorry! 😞 )

The lumia 820 is less sharp than the 1020, but whites do seem whiter and brighter on the lumia 820, while the 1020 are more warmer and slightly tinged with yellow in comparison. This may be to do with the lumia 820 being 'over white' as when i just look at the 1020 in normal use, the whites look white.

Build:

Lumia 1020: it was lighter than i was expecting as being used to the 900 which weighed the same roughly (go figure!) but being larger i guess spreads the weight out.

The camera is the thing you have to get used to as the rest of the phone is very familiar to anybody using previous lumia's so while holiding the phone, i have a finger over the "NO" part of nokia on the camera hump. This is wierd at first but i have got used to it.(if using the wireless charging case, you notice it less due to less difference between camera and back plate)

Buttons are nice to press, have a solid feel to them. Havnt used speakers or head phones so cant comment on them.

Casing:

Lumia 900: comfortable weight to it, felt solid, finished well, but wasnt anything....special

Lumia 820: The removable cases (as rest is pretty much screen) had a more premium feel than the 900 and felt softer while not losing the reobustness feel of the 900

Lumia 1020: by far the nicest phone texture of the 3, feels soft to touch, almost like a rubberised plastic, hard to explain . feels solid, but i dnt feel it 'feels' as solid as the other 2, but they may just be me as it is new and precious!

The glass on the front:

The lumai 900 was flat with a slight ridge going from glass to the polycarbonate, whih was fine, but wasnt the nicest to run yor finger over

The lumia 820, even with its flat screen and changeable covers managed to make the change from screen to case much nicer smoother and softer

The lumia 1020 nicest of them all, much like the 820, but has a slight curver to the edge of the glass which feels great and looks awesome when looking at it.

Apps

Lumia 900: windows 7.8 so was coming to its ends, worked but wasnt the greatest for support so will leave it there

Lumia 820 and 1020 both windows 8 with amber update from nokia. not sure if the pro cam stuff is available on the 820 has havent checked and as both are windows 8 , they have same apps. Ability to control colour warmness and saturation is cool, but still couldnt get the lumia 1020 looking as white as the 820.

Battery life seems good on the 1020, as always with a new thing, you play with it a lot at the beginning but still easily lasts me a day with small amount of gaming and general browsing of the phone, small amount of picture taking too.

Thats my thoughts so far:)
