Since I've had my Nokia 5 in April it's gone from Nougat on first startup to Oreo and then in May got Oreo 8.1.0
Hasn't had a security patch since May though but as the article says I understand it should get 9 (Pie)
Having been a Samsung owner previously I have to say HMD are much better at keeping stuff updated.

Finally sorted the problem with the patches but had to reset the phone and boot it without a SIM to get the patches to install.

No unfortunately not..
The Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are currently running on Android Oreo 8.0 at least in some markets, and was launched on marshmallow which is Android 6.0.1 was updated to Android Nougat and now to Oreo, which means the device has completed its two years of major Software Update cycle, And is no longer eligible for Android Pie 9.0. Even the Galaxy S8 which is the successor of the Galaxy S7; will get the Android Pie in mid-2019, after the Galaxy S9/S9+ receives it, which is probably in early Q1 2019.
