Tech That We Said Goodbye To In 2014

2014 introduced many tech things (iPhone 6, 3D TV, Samsgun Galaxy tab), but unfortunately it also said goodbye to some much loved tech things, such as MSN Messenger.  I used to like MSN Messenger and I don't like Skype so I just don't use it anymore. I guess Facebook chat is the next best thing.

Here is a list of the main things that have disappeared this year:

  • MSN Messenger
  • iPod Classic - my very first iPod (black and white)
  • Plasma TV
  • Windows XP (I quite like Windows 8 now but my mum still uses Vista).
  • Nokia (i've never owned a Nokia phone so I can't comment on the pros/cons).

Is there anything from that list that you will miss? Is there something missing from that list?

I hadn't thought of Linux.  Fingers crossed I don't have to worry about this for a while and my laptop will last!  Luckily my husband is pretty good at fixing computers so I don't have to worry on that score.

I'm still loading XP on to some laptops that I sell on eBay, for the same reasons I guess as you, as that is what some people prefer.
It's OK as long as you use it with a good AV programme or just use them as non networked machines.

Whilst we are able, some of us will prefer to stick with what we know. It isn't always a case of having to have the latest tech just because it's there.

There is an old saying...if it aint broke don't fix it......And again its all down to personal choice...

I didn't think you were @Anonymous!

I like to have an up to date phone but an up to date laptop doesn't really bother me.  I upgraded my first one (HP) as it only had a 40GB hard drive, the next one (Dell) went as it died despite my husband's best efforts to revive it and I tolerate this one as I know how to use it!

And in my collection of operating systems and in current use:

1) 8 year old laptop running XP happily though the IDE drive is rather slow these days and the laptop is showing signs of dying at some inappropriate moment.

2) Win 8.1 "The beast" that I built this year and I prefer it over Win 7. Some minor irritants but strangely, I find it less stressful than Win7 and XP. Now my main machine when I need to do some stuff on it (Virtual Machines, DTP, Office, games & development). Need to get a decent size monitor though.

3) Win 7: work laptop. I hate Win7 coming from XP! Its just seems far more annoying to do little things I took for granted in XP. Or my work locked down O/S has made it annoying.

4) WHS2011: quite nice to use though not a desktop and a great server o/s if you're not a linux person. Sadly discontinued. Primarily a media backup server for me.

5) Fedora linux (based on Red Hat): Love it as its easy to set up and configure though I tend to be more of a command line person so the desktop is a means to an end. Would be my recommendation to try out Linux as everything is there. I tried Ubuntu but really didn't get on with it so its there as a virtual machine on my Win 8.1 system to test things out on.

6) Solaris: Oddball one so unless you like unix/linux on the enterprise side of things, probably not one most people would even know about! Great for storage especially ZFS is so easy to manage.

7) Mac OS X (mavericks) on this Macbook Air: Only just got this. Some good things but I'm in a learning curve at the moment but I can see why people rave about it. And a decent command line Bouncy However, it is overpriced.

😎 There's a Vista laptop that my father has which he has no problems with and I won't touch!

I think I prefer running the latest software as it is easier (well it is supposed to be) to get support from Microsoft if there is a problem with the OS.

Hi @sheepdog

Have you considered Yosimite. I find this smoother than Mavericks , although Mavericks played well for me too. 😄

Good Morning @gemz4the1

One aspect of not using Windows regularly now is not missing all those regular Windows updates !  😜

I agree @Anonymous - sometimes I do updates one day and less than a week later I have 20+ updates to do for various things.

Are the updates for macbook similar to iPads/iPhones? Whereas there is like one big update then a few minor ones? I am thinking of investing in a macbook slight_smile

Hi gemz

The updates for OS X are far and few between. 😄

Apps on the Mac update like those on iPhones / iPads.

In Fact my last OS X update was a patch which took a few minutes.

One patch was 10/12/24 and then the next was 23/12/14
