"Apple responds to iPhone 6 Plus bending issue; says it’s ‘extremely rare’ in normal use"
Statement from Apple
"Our iPhones are designed, engineered and manufactured to be both beautiful and sturdy. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus feature a precision engineered unibody enclosure constructed from machining a custom grade of 6000 series anodized aluminum, which is tempered for extra strength. They also feature stainless steel and titanium inserts to reinforce high stress locations and use the strongest glass in the smartphone industry. We chose these high-quality materials and construction very carefully for their strength and durability. We also perform rigorous tests throughout the entire development cycle including 3-point bending, pressure point cycling, sit, torsion, and user studies. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus meet or exceed all of our high quality standards to endure everyday, real life use.
With normal use a bend in iPhone is extremely rare and through our first six days of sale, a total of nine customers have contacted Apple with a bent iPhone 6 Plus. As with any Apple product, if you have questions please contact Apple."

Precisely
So if the metal bends it is of a lesser strength specification than the screen.
One can liken it to an F1 cockpit which is the strongest area of an F1 car so that the driver is protected....everything else is built to a lesser strength specification so that it all breaks away if impacted, leaving the driver untouched strapped into the cockpit.
An extreme example, I know, but the theory is the same. Why build a phone body which has a weaker component than the screen glass ?
The aluminium alloy chassis should protect the components within the body of the phone and that includes the glass screen.

I read that they never used Sapphire Glass as it was too difficult to work with and the weight of using it went against the original device intentions. Lets saying they did though, you would have a handset which essentially would not replaced for a long time. I think that's the real reason....
Like a women you want something you can hold onto not be waifer thin.

I'm just so glad I received a notification about the 'No Service' issue before updating to iOS 8.0.1 before I hooked up to iTunes !
Someone's getting canned over that I expect.
No doubt. Not to mention iOS801gate affected a lot more people than bendgate evidently has
We really need to stop adding the word gate onto the end of things

No no, don't be silly, it's just they are being put in the wrong pocket this time.

Probably best to just leave them on the bedside table at all times
