Not sure what's happening in Florida US.

Yesterday we had news about a 22 year old singer Christina Grimmie who was shot and killed at the Plaza in Florida. Christina was a contestant on the Voice and was perfoming at the Florida venue. After she was shot, her killer then shot and killed himself

Today in breaking news, another awful incident is unfolding. A shooting at a nightclub in Orlando...and hostages taken.

Shooter is American. Afghani parents, but he was born in the US. Parents have just said this had nothing to do with religion. They are as shocked as everyone else. They said they think it may have been because of his feelings about homosexuality.

It's always about one person's feelings towards something or other.
It's a shame we can't just run a test on everyone and "remove" the dangerous ones.

As well as an undetected mental condition perhaps ?

We all dislike various things/people/religions etc but we don't all become shooters.

I think the American authorities are treating it as a terrorist atrocity at the moment from what I was reading elsewhere whatever the parents are saying. When, when, when will America get some sort of gun legislation in place. The right to bear arms and protect yourself just doesn't cut it and hasn't done for many years.

According to a report I heard on the radio this morning, one of his parents said that several weeks ago he made a comment about two men he saw kissing that surprised them and was out of character. If he did have a mental condition, it appears his parents weren't aware of it, nor was the security firm he worked for.

@jonsie Florida has practically no gun laws. If you buy a gun, you don't even have to register it. If the deaths of 26 children several years ago didn't spur a call for a national gun law, this won't either, unfortunately.

But how does someone like that get his hands on the type of weapons used? It will take a strong man to outlaw the readily availability of guns. We aren't talking simple handguns here. The big problem is that it will never get through the Senate because these people are too scared of losing votes and the gravy train that goes with the job. That's one big reason I have never considered living in the US despite 11 visits.

Sadly, there are gun stores where you can buy semi-automatic weapons over the counter. It's a horrible indictment of my country that the NRA (who also just endorsed the despicable Trump) have a huge lobby in Congress and have so much influence. Makes me ashamed.

This is shocking.  I love Orlando, it's such a relaxed friendly place, and it's heartbreaking that something like this has happened.

When we went for the first time, I was shocked at how many gun fairs and shows were advertised. I read earlier that Florida wants to relax the gun laws and make it legal to openly carry.  If this is the case no public place could ban guns.  Thankfully places like Walt Disney World (just an example of somewhere there are large crowds of people) are privately owned and could therefore continue to ban weapons.

I don't recall saying that the shooter was sane. Obviously he was not, but it appears that until today no one was aware of it. I just read an article saying that he was on the FBI's radar as a possible ISIS sympathizer, but no mention of a suspected mental condition.
