From the way I see it, I can go into the o2 shop tomorrow, pay off the rest of my existing bill (using the Early Upgrade
Offer), and start a new contract. Is this correct?
Can I also keep my existing number? Do I need to do anything before going into the shop tomorrow?

But you need to ensure you have backed up and synced in itunes first.
You will keep the same number.
You will need to follow the instructions on the simswap page links in the iphone thread sitcky.
Once number swapped to micro sim activate new iphone and setup as old phone not as new all will be put back on the iphone as before apps texts etc.
Then you can erase the old iphone and do what you like.
Asuming you have an iphone.
If not you need to copy contact to your pc using your old phones software or sync with outlook etc that itunes can sync to.

As far as I am aware, you will keep the same number. The only thing you will need to do is bring some ID such as a driving license.

My contract runs out in October, early buy out costs £60.
I am happy with that, I pay £35 a month plus £10 laptop internet tethering.
Would be more than happy to sign up for new 24 month contract.
BUT
they want £119 for a new phone.
I am not that desparate and I think O2 are taking the proverbial, it is not clear and I didnt see it until a mate pointed it out.
I upgraded the os on my 3G in advance and it has slowed down dramatically.
So I am resetting the os and will not be upgrading.
Come October I will have the freedom of choice!

You saying that it costs to upgrade? i.e. you have to buy the phone also?

They imply that if you are on an existing contract then you can buy out that contract for £20 per month and upgrade with a new contract.
There is nothing in the emails to say that the new phone you pay for. I have never had to pay for a new phone at the end of my contract.
If you look at their tariffs the "cost" part is highlighted in blue.
Even the O2 customer service centre agreed that it was not clear!

Personally, I will be paying £29 for the phone and then £50 for the 18 month. Downgrading after 9 months.
