Its prudent that you saved the proof and so only right that o2 pay the deposit back as agreed.
As for deposits.
Its possible your credit rating was border line.
Bear in mind the subsidy the network is giving on the handset so they obviously want to recoup it.

I spent a good twenty mintues browsing o2's details about USB dongles for internet and found one at £15 a month quite reasonable. So I filled in all my details, had specified I was after 2 months to the rather helpful o2 live chat thing, yet just before I got to submit my order, all of a sudden I need to pay a £100 deposit, which is refundable after 3 months payment. I understand the deposit but 1. Why not mention it before I spend time filling everything in, and 2. I only wanted the dongle for 2 months in the first place?
I knew there was a catch 😞

The dongles are not cheap therefore the network will want to be confident of providing you with the hardware.
