Hi there peeps, i was looking forward to the new Nokia N97 coming out, and wondered why i hadnt seen anything on the website, phoned o2 up and at first they said they were not going to do the handset at all, then they said well maybe they would but dont know, then finally yesterday told me that no way would they be doing this handset :mansurprised: ? Anyone know why? unlike o2 not to get this in to be honest, they have always had the others when they came out.

n86
x6
omnia hd
satio
n97 mini
n900

all phones that beat the n97 in my eyes and o2 did a good job not stocking it

it wasnt ready to be sold yet , nokia should have released the n86 , hyped up the camera etc etc then worked harder on the n97 untill the revised backplate was ready and the shipping software was right

that way the n86 wouldnt have been overshadowed by the n97 and would have sold better , then they could have had another big release around this time or just before xmas with the n97 and it would have been ready for sale

as it is they had 2 phones go up at the same time one with massive hype and the same one not ready to be sold , n97

leaving the one that had no hype but was ready to be sold , n86 , hiding in the shadows when actually its a cracking stable device

o2 stocked the right one out of the two thats for sure slight_smile

check it out mate

only thing it looses on the n97 is screen size and memory allthough the n86 does have oled which looks amazing

it can still have 24gb through a 16gb sd card and 40gb when the 32gb cards are released

it hasnt crashed on me once yet since fri/sat and ive been proper using all the features and multitasking away

loving the n86 at the min

spot on mate, the N97 is just abig version of the 5800, same everything, well almost.
N86 looks nice, better camera and most of all WORKS!

At the end of the day it's just a phone it's not life or death, but I have been told that o2 may well be getting the N97 mini.
I have some inside info but it's only a rumour, so watch this space!

n97 mini should havce better firmware with kinetic scrolling from the start and also has a metal battery cover and no camera cover that will scratch your camera

it may also have the new shielded gps design out of the box

when the n97 problems are sorted ie the new backplate is shipping with new handsets and the handset reaches v20 later this month then it will be a better device thats for sure

at the minute its just to risky with the camera problem and the gps problem nokia have fixed them but alot of n97s out there will be older and have the old backplate

in a few months most n97s will be shipping with v20 and the new backplate

nokia released the n97 to early

the returns rate is very very high check all the forums theirs users on their 4-6th handset , theres people out there averaging a new n97 a month

o2 done well not to stock it really as did orange when it failed their testing regime they carry out

they were going to stock it but when they tested it the n97 failed their software tests as nokia had shipped it with beta firmware basically

dont rush into anything yet

if you do want the n97 then wait a few months and get one with the new backplate and better fimrware

and as robbo said wait it out for a bit as o2 may even stock one of the better qwerty nokias like e72 , n900 , n97 mini

if they dont they still have the satio or n86 which are top handsets

bux is right

If you're thinking of buying an N97 check out these links first:-

That should give you enough breadth of info to allow you to make an informed decision.

If you decide you can't live without one, give it a month. By that time it should be as good as it's ever going to get. The next firmware update (the third) is meant to bring world peace, as well as fixing all the defects. You'll soon find out from the responses in those forums whether the firmware update has cured all ills.

The N97 came out in the UK on June 26th. Nokia has had 3 1/2 months to sort it out, and it's not fixed yet. Not only does the phone have a bad name amongst those who've used it, but it's damaged Nokia's name too.

I've been embarrassed to have someone in my car, when I use my N97 GPS. So I've bought an external GPS to work with it. It works great now. My external GPS is so small and unobtrusive that, unless you know, you'd think it was just the N97.

Having now visited a "Nokia Care Point" for the first time, thanks to the N97, I have no faith in Nokia Service either.

I've bought a spare back for the camera, and this includes the (potentially) scratched window over the camera lens, so if it gets scratched I can replace it quite easily. Also, I now have my external bluetooth GPS. So, since I no longer trust Nokia (as a company) at all, I may just live with the N97's inbuilt defects for the next 18 months of my O2 contract.

And, of course, never buy a Nokia again.

£500? What a joke!

If your contract is up soon, I'd recommend going onto Simplicity for a month or two, and revisit your N97 plan then.

My contract with o2 expires in December. I was rather hoping to upgrade my phone to Nokia N97 - wanted to drag my favourite mp3 files into it and use it a mass-storage for portable apps i I use. Unfortunately it looks like o2 is not going to offer this model... Having had a look on their website and in store I noticed that o2's policy has increasingly become that of 'an i-phone or a sh**-phone'. Will have to jump ship for the first time in 6 years. There is an option of buying a sim-free handset but to do that I would have to get a really, really, good deal on my contract. Guess will give them a call and see. 😞

the satio is better then the n97 and o2 stock that mate it runs the same os and is the 1st phone to use symbian foundation not just s60v5 like 5800 and the n97

i would consider the n900 more then the n97

in a couple of months time o2 should have more phones as they wont be the only network stocking the iphone

id wait it out untill about jan/feb and then make the move if nothing has turn up

id also consider the omnia hd in my eyes the best phone of 2009 and still the most powerfull even though it was made 8 months ago

seriously check it out its got the best hardware ive seen on a mobile , ram , cpu , dsp chip , 3d gfx , this thing has very good specs in all them departments

Your links are dated March and February. A day is a long time in politics. Also, that was all pre-release theory. Today we are in reality.
I repeat, there is no installation of Skype on my N97.
Will anyone with Skype on their N97 (pre-installed) please hold their hands up?
Of course, if you really want it, and it's allowed by your network provider, here is where to get it:-
http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/download/skype/mobile/

N97 on three is pre-installed with skype.
